EUDI Wallet.

eIDAS 2.0 · European Digital Identity

The EUDI Wallet, explained for the people who have to build for it.

Every EU member state must offer a European Digital Identity Wallet to its citizens and residents by 24 December 2026. From late 2027 (expected), large platforms and regulated sectors will have to accept it. This is an independent, no-nonsense reference to what that means and how to prepare.

The two dates that matter

20 May 2024

eIDAS 2.0 in force

Regulation (EU) 2024/1183 amending eIDAS entered into force, creating the legal basis for the European Digital Identity Wallet.

24 December 2026

Wallets must be available

Each member state must offer at least one EUDI Wallet to its citizens and residents (24 months after the implementing acts).

December 2027

Acceptance obligation expected to begin

From late 2027, very large online platforms and regulated sectors (e.g. banking, telecoms) are expected to have to accept the EUDI Wallet where strong user authentication is required. The precise commencement depends on the relevant implementing acts and is subject to confirmation.
