What is the EUDI Wallet?

A plain-language introduction to the European Digital Identity Wallet — what it is, what it holds, and why it matters.

The EUDI Wallet — the European Digital Identity Wallet — is a free mobile app that every EU member state must offer to its citizens and residents. It lets you prove who you are, and share specific facts about yourself, securely and across borders, without handing over more data than necessary.

What it holds

Think of it as a government-grade wallet for digital credentials:

  • Your core identity (Person Identification Data, or PID), issued by your member state.
  • Attestations of attributes — a driving licence, a diploma, proof of age, professional qualifications, or that you hold a particular bank account.
  • Future credentials issued by public or private bodies that join the ecosystem.

What you can do with it

  • Log in to public and private online services with strong, phishing-resistant authentication.
  • Prove a single fact — for example, that you are over 18 — without revealing your name or date of birth.
  • Sign documents electronically with legal effect.
  • Use it across the EU: a wallet issued in one member state is recognised in all the others.

Why it exists

It comes from eIDAS 2.0, the EU regulation that created a common framework for digital identity. The goals are convenience (one trusted credential across the single market), privacy (selective disclosure and user control), and sovereignty (an EU-governed alternative to logging in with big-tech accounts).

Key dates

Member states must make a wallet available by 24 December 2026, and from late 2027 (expected) large platforms and regulated sectors will have to accept it. See the country-readiness page for where each member state stands, or the integration handbook if you need to build for it.
